The TON blockchain, backed by Telegram, had a big problem on August 28th when it stopped making new blocks for nearly seven hours. This happened because there was too much activity on the network due to the launch of a new memecoin called DOGS. The last block created before the stop was number 39987437, but blocks started being produced again later.

How The Ton Blockchain Outage Occurred
Tonk Inu, a platform on the TON blockchain, was the first to notice the issue. They reported that the launch of DOGS led to a huge increase in network traffic, which probably caused the outage. The official account for the TON blockchain on X (formerly Twitter) confirmed that the network was dealing with heavy traffic, saying that about 20 million transactions had happened in the last two days.
Because of this overload, the TON validator nodes, which are important for the network to work, couldn’t agree on the next steps, causing them to stop functioning properly. The TON development team, called TON Core, asked validators to restart their nodes at 4:00 AM UTC to fix the problem. This restart was meant to clear up the backlog of tasks and get everything working together again. The TON team assured users that their assets were safe and that any pending transactions would be completed once the network was back to normal.
Because of this issue, major cryptocurrency exchanges like Binance, Bybit, and OKX paused transactions with the TON blockchain. Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, some members of the TON community, including one named Justin, think that the new DOGS memecoin caused the problem.
DOGS was launched on August 26th and quickly reached over $1.7 billion in trading volume within just ten hours. The next day, Tonscan, a tool for checking the blockchain, reported that the memecoin created a lot of traffic, causing some important services on the TON blockchain to be temporarily paused.
