The Normie Meme Coin team has come under fire for releasing a promotional video that depicted an act of suicide.
The controversial video, which was intended to promote the cryptocurrency token, showed the Normie character engaging in self-harm, followed by a burial scene, and culminating with an encounter with a deity-like figure.
In the video, the deity tells Normie that they need to find a way out, even when everything seems against them, and that positive change starts within
It immediately sparked outrage within the cryptocurrency community, leading to widespread condemnation for its insensitive content. (screenshot can be found on our telegram channel)
In response to the backlash, the Normie team took to X to issue a public apology.
The tweet expressed regret over the incident, stating,
“After careful consideration and internal reflection, we have decided to remove our last video. The intended message was to demonstrate that there is always a way out, even when everything is coming at you, and that positive change begins with oneself. It was never our intention to trivialize such a serious issue”
The apology, however, did not quell the storm of criticism. Many users questioned the decision-making process behind the video, with one user asking,
“How is this the intern’s fault? Did he make and post the whole video himself? Did your team not approve it? Fire whoever should’ve been helping the intern and allowed that to happen.
The controversy comes on the heels of previous incidents involving the Normie Meme Coin. Earlier, the token’s value had plummeted by 99% following a flash loan attack that exploited a flaw in the coin’s contract tax mechanism.
The attacker managed to manipulate the token supply and drain liquidity pools, which caused massive financial damage to investors.
Following that, the hacker contacted the Normie team, offering to return 90% of the stolen funds on the condition that they would be used to launch a new token to compensate the affected holders.

Before this incident, Normie had reached a peak market cap of $130 million on April 2, only to see its value crash dramatically following the exploit.
The Normie team had accepted the hacker’s terms, using the returned assets and additional funds from their development wallet to launch a new token.
After back to back controversies, Normie, which had been a popular meme coin on the Base network, now faces a critical moment.
